Emergency First Aid

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 set out the essential aspects of first aid that employers have to address. Employers have a legal duty to make appropriate arrangements to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. The cause of the injury or illness does not change the requirement for treatment and a call for more specialised help (999 Ambulance call) if required. First aid can save lives and prevent minor injuries becoming major ones. The provision of First-aid in the workplace covers the specific arrangements required to manage injuries or illness suffered at work. The Regulations do not prevent staff who are specially trained from taking action beyond the initial management stage.
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) training enables a first-aider to give emergency aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work. The training provides the first aider with knowledge and skills to administer first aid to a range of specific injuries and illnesses.
