Module 4 CPC

Module 4 Drivers Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) Initial practical training and test is a requirement for all new LGV drivers who passed their Class C driving test after September 2009.
Drivers who have grandfather rights ie passed their car test after 1997 may also take this test if they have not had a CPC entitlement before.
The Module 4 practical training and test can be taken here at our Stowmarket Training Centre using our vehicle.

Course Content

The Module 4 Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) Initial qualification has 4 parts:

  • Part 1 – Theory test (this includes 2 separate tests – multiple-choice and hazard perception)
  • Part 2 – Driver CPC case studies test
  • Part 3 – Driving ability test
  • Part 4 – Driver CPC practical demonstration test


As with the theory and hazard perception tests, the Driver CPC Case Studies are computer-based.
Each candidate is shown seven short scenarios that are related to real life situations that goods vehicle drivers may encounter.  e.g. driving in icy conditions, driving on rural roads etc.

There are between 6 and 8 questions per scenario, totalling 50 marks. The questions are a mix of multiple choice, short answers, and clicking areas of a picture short answers.

Each candidate has 1.5 hours to complete Module 2 online at a DSA Test Centre and must score a minimum of 38 marks to gain a pass.

The vehicle safety demonstration will last approximately 30 minutes and consists of 5 topics from the Driver CPC syllabus.  In order to pass you must score 15 out of 20 points in each topic area (75%) with an overall combined score of 80%.

You will need to show your knowledge and ability in the following areas:

  • loading the vehicle, paying attention to safety rules and using the vehicle properly
  • security of the vehicle and its contents
  • preventing criminality and trafficking of illegal immigrants – e.g. what you should do if you have returned to the vehicle after taking a comfort break on a ferry or at a border crossing
  • assessing emergency situations
  • preventing physical risk
  • completing a physical walk round vehicle safety check
